The Alvarez homestead was quiet, the kitchen and living room bathed in an ambiance of golden light and pleasing smells. Remnants of Maggie's buffalo chicken soup permeated the air where it cooled in a big pot on the stove. Clean bowls were piled up in the drying rack, spoons in the utensil compartment. A soft radio voice filled the room, vying with the hum of the refrigerator. A light drizzle tapped against the skylights above, sudden gusts of wind rattling the shingles and bringing with it the promise of uncertain weather, storms, and dust.

Chris dried her hand on a towel and hung it on the drying rack above the counter. She ripped off a piece of plastic wrap from the dispenser, placing it over the top of the soup to leave for anyone coming in after shift. Goldie was due up and would head out to the stables to take a handoff from Tamara, while Emily and Juan would be piling into the house soon. Chris turned and strode to the table where three candles burned, one a lavender scented Christmas gift she'd never used, the others assortments of old gifts and half-burned trunks of wax they'd used as holiday decorations.

A map of Louisville lay spread on the table, the original they'd started with plus the hand-drawn maps Billy and Lisa brought in, taped together and marked up with notes from their scouting missions — gas stations, department stores, houses with solar panels. Maggie sat in front of the map, knees together and a cup of tea in front of her. She was leaning on one elbow, chin in her palm, tapping a pencil on the paper.

"I've got to tell you, Chris," Maggie said, "these scouting missions are paying off. We've actually got more supplies than what we started with."

Chris rested a hand on Maggie's shoulder and looked over the map, eyes absently tracing all the spots Lisa and Billy had gone. "And Brett Wilson's coming through with milk and cream."

"Couldn't have made the soup without it," Maggie said. "Good thing he opened up his old creamery."

Chris nodded. "He told me they'd shut it down after they started shipping their whole milk off-site to be processed. Had to go in and clean everything up. Got it all sanitized and started up again."

Maggie bowed her head toward the refrigerator. "We've got all the milk we can drink, and Billy and Lisa even took some out to Amy."

"I know she appreciates it with all the folks she's putting up out there."

Rhonda sat on the opposite side of the table with Rachel in her lap, going over the list of supplies and notes they'd been taking over the past two weeks. "And we've got enough supplies to make bread."

"The first loaf was amazing," Maggie said with a satisfied smile.

"The yeast is still good," Rhonda said, running her finger down the handwritten list. "And we've got enough flour stored away to make several dozen loaves. Brett's grain mill is working perfectly — the consistency is just right.
